Dorothea Hirschberg (nee Herrmann) was the daughter of Alexander Herrmann and sister of Paul Herrmann. She was born on October 3rd, 1887, in Berlin, Germany. She was deported to Auschwitz on the 29th of November, 1942 and murdered there sometime before the 8th of May, 1945. She was the mother of Gerald Hirschberg (nee Gunther Hirschberg, 18 September, 1914 – 20 August, 2004) and John Hirschberg (nee Hans Hirschberg born on November 10th, 1925). Both sons survived the Holocaust. Dorothea’s husband, Eugen Hirschberg was born on October 9th, 1887. Eugen died following an asthma attack and a reaction to morphine on October 9th, 1928 at the Charité hospital and is buried in Berlin-Weißensee Cemetery. Dorothea’s son, John (nee Hans) Hirschberg, remembers her neat handwriting; she was a secretary and very organized. John recalls that she offered for him to take the children’s transport out of Germany, to France, when he was 13 years of age, which he did.
