Little is known about the Düsseldorf native, Irma Marcus. Her father was Alois Scheinberger. Irma Marcus had an older sister Erna, who was able to emigrate to the United States with her husband, Dr. Alois Nagler, a renowned theatre historian.

Irma and her husband, Kurt Marcus, were initially subtenants in a large 6-bedroom apartment at Thomasiusstraße 26. After the main tenant, Louise Levy, was deported in 1941, the Marcuses took over the large apartment. During those years of no rights for Jews, their home was soon turned into a so-called “Jews apartment”, as Irma and her husband were forced to rent out several rooms in their apartment to Jews who had to move out of their own homes, so they could be turned over to non-Jews.

Also at this time, Irma Marcus had to do forced labor. She and her husband Kurt tried in vain to join Irma’s sister, Erna, in the USA.

In 1942, when it was inevitable that Irma and Kurt Marcus would soon be deported, Kurt Marcus went underground. He is listed as “missing, presumed dead”, and was probably killed on the run from the authorities.
On September 5, 1942 Irma Marcus was deported to Riga and murdered upon arrival. She was 35.
