Martin Rosenthal was born in Genthin. He was the oldest son of Julius Rosenthal and his wife Martha, née Herrenberg. The Rosenthals were from Wolin in Pomerania, and moved from Genthin to Berlin in about 1904. Martin Rosenthal had four brothers and two sisters. One of his brothers, Julius Rosenthal, started up a wholesale textile company, located at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße 51 in Berlin. Julius later operated a menswear and tailoring business.

Martin Rosenthal learned tailoring, and from 1921 to 1927 he was the owner of a woven fabrics business. From 1932 to 1936 he operated a tailoring business with his brother Erwin, located at Spandauer Straße in Berlin-Mitte.

Martin and his wife Charlotte lived in Prenzlauer Berg until 1934. The couple had no children. We do not know when the couple moved to Thomasiusstraße 26, but they subleased a room there. Martin Rosenthal had to perform slave labor as a presser, at Fa. Bergmann, Chemische Reinigung und Militärfärberei, a dry cleaning and military dyeing company located in Alt-Moabit.

On March 3, 1943, Martin Rosenthal was deported to Auschwitz, one day after his wife, Charlotte. Martin, his wife, his parents and all of his siblings, except for one sister, were murdered by the Nazis. This sister Rita and her daughter went into hiding, and lived after the war in the USA. They are now both deceased. Martin’s niece, the daughter of his deported sister Irma, lives in Berlin.
