Gerda Kafka was part of the workers’ resistance in Berlin and a comrade-in-arms of the Saefkow-Jacob-Bästlein organization, one of the largest resistance groups fighting the Nazi regime in the period 1942-1945. She was born on 9 April 1920 in Berlin and became a sales assistant. She last lived with her husband, Alfred Kafka, and their two children in Bergener Strasse 2 (now number 1) in Prenzlauer Berg. Gerda Kafka was a KPD (Communist Party of Germany) member and joined a resistance group when the war broke out. She established contacts, conveyed information, distributed flyers and participated in collecting and supplying food for those living underground. She and her husband hid two men, who had escaped from custody on 22 April 1945, in their home. On 25 April 1945 she set out to take information to Berlin-Pankow and never returned. In 1947 Gerda Kafka was declared dead since 25 April 1945.
