On 14 November 1935 she married the decorative painter Mase Grünwald. They lived with Gerda's parents at Bochumer Straße 15 in Berlin-Moabit.
In 1938, her brother Hans fled to Shanghai. In 1939, her parents also fled to Shanghai.
Presumably at the same time, Gerda and Mase Grünwald fled to Palestine. The exact circumstances are not known. Gerda lived the rest of her life in Haifa, Israel until her death on February 19, 1992 at the age of 79.  Gerda and Mase did not have any children.
