My grandfather Moses was born on September 16, 1893 in Staryi Uhryniv, Kalusch in the Ukraine. My grandmother Szeindel was born on August 12, 1890 in Tarnow, Poland.

I don't know when my grandparents emigrated to Berlin, but it must have been before the First World War.  As far as I know, my grandfather was drafted into the army during the First World War, as he was already living in Berlin.

They lived in Berlin in an apartment building at Köpenicker Straße 68 in Berlin Mitte.

My mother's daughter Fanny was born in Berlin on June 5, 1925.

I don't have much information about her life in Berlin. I know that my mother attended a Jewish school in Berlin until it was closed and Jewish pupils were forbidden to attend school.

My grandfather had an egg store in the building where they lived, my grandmother worked as a seamstress and she also helped my grandfather in the store.

They left Berlin by train in August 1941 and, according to what my mother told me, they traveled through France and Spain and arrived in Lisbon in Portugal. They took the ship SS Mouzinho and arrived in New York harbor on September 1, 1941.

There they were able to build a new life for themselves.
