Hertha Klein was born on 20 July 1894 in Böhmisch Leipa (today Česká Lípa, Czech Republic), which at that time belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy. Her parents were Joseph Wiesen and Ida Wiesenova, née Bergova.

In 1921, aged 27, Hertha married Dr. phil. Hugo Klein, a 31-year-old rabbi, in Eisenach. Two years later, on 12 April 1923, their son Gerhard was born in Berlin-Reinickendorf. Gerhard was able to immigrate to England with a kindertransport before war broke out. His parents Hertha and Hugo Klein, however, stayed in their apartment at Schloss Strasse 1 in Berlin-Hermsdorf. On 15 August 1942 they were deported to Riga together with 900 others on the 18th “transport to the east” and murdered in the surrounding woods shortly after their arrival. Only one woman on this transport survived the war.

Hertha Klein’s son Gerhard lived in England until his death in 2003, first in London and lastly in Exeter, Devon.
