Hedwig Levy was born on 14.06.1873 in Selchow, a small community to the south of Berlin. She had six siblings. She married Hermann Mueller with whom she had three children, Leo, Walter and Margarete. Hermann Mueller, who originated in Hungary, died before World War I and was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Weissensee.

In 1942/3 Hedwig's daughter Margarete and her family were considering - along with most of their relatives – emigrating to Hungary. Hedwig was already seventy, frail and dependent on her walking-stick. She wanted to stay in Berlin and because of this, her daughter's family decided not to leave for the time being. 'What could Hitler do to an old woman like me? I haven't got the strength to fight against what he believes in. You go, leave me here', Hedwig Mueller told her family again and again.

Her health declined and she had to go to hospital for a fortnight, to the Virchow Clinic, where she kept her obviously Jewish maiden name Levy a secret in order to get treatment. When she was discharged from hospital she moved into the one-room apartment of her daughter's family, where Margarete looked after her.

It is probable that the family was denounced by neighbours. Hedwig's grand-daughter Helga, who was five at the time, can remember her grandmother being dragged out of the apartment in her nightdress by two members of the Gestapo. She was taken to a hospital in Berlin where her family was able to visit her one last time.

On 10.03.1944 she was deported to Theresienstadt and from there on 16.05.1944 to Auschwitz. There is no record of the date of her death. Her children and grand-children survived the Holocaust. Her grand-children and great-grandchildren live in the United States and in Germany.
