Esther Smietanka, née Weinfeld, was born on August 28, 1904 in Warsaw. She married the watchmaker Lejb Smietanka, also from Warsaw, who ran a shop at Elsässer Strasse 36 in Berlin-Mitte. The couple had a son, Saadje, who was born in Berlin on February 28, 1938.
After being released from six months in the Sachsenhausen camp in March 1940, Lejb Smietanka fled Germany.
The fate of Esther and her son Saadje is uncertain. Both were on the transport list of the 34th transport from Berlin to Auschwitz dated March 4, 1943, but their names were subsequently crossed out. It is not known whether the mother and son were killed when they were being picked up from the apartment or whether they were able to escape.
