Saadje Smietanka was born on February 28, 1938 in Berlin. His parents were Lejb and Esther Smietanka, nee Weinfeld, from Warsaw. His father ran a watchmaker's shop at Elsässer Strasse 36 in Berlin-Mitte.
In May 1940, Lejb Smietanka fled Germany after being released from the Sachsenhausen camp in March after six months incarceration.
The fate of Saadje and his mother is uncertain. Both were on the transport list of the 34th transport from Berlin to Auschwitz dated March 4, 1943, but their names were subsequently crossed out. It is not known whether the mother and son were killed when they were being picked up from the apartment or whether they were able to escape.
