Simon Asch, his wife Marta and their children Irma, Elinor and Werner, had been living at Thomasiusstraße 3 since the 1930s. Daughter Ellinor was a pupil at the Adass Yisroel school in Hansaviertel, until the authorities closed it down.
Simon's son Werner worked as a taxi driver until 1936, when he was no longer allowed to work, because he was a Jew. Around 1940 Werner married Liselotte Fraenkel and moved with her just around the corner, to Turmstrasse 76, where the couple rented from the Berlinsky family. Simon's daughter Irma also got married and moved with her husband, Walter Freundlich, to the Hansaviertel district.
Simon Asch, who was a tailor, had to do slave labor at the Karl Berger metals factory at Dieffenbachstraße in Kreuzberg.
Also at this time, Simon’s wife Marta was taking care of her sister, Recha Caminer, who was blind and had moved in with the Asch family.
In 1941 son Werner Asch was deported with his wife from Turmstrasse to the Minsk ghetto, where both were killed.
Ten months later in September 1942, Simon Asch was deported with his wife, his daughter Ellinor and his sister in law Recha Caminer to Raasiku, Estonia and murdered. Simon was 63.
Six months later, Simon’s daughter Irma and her husband were sent to their deaths at Auschwitz.
